New Network Processor Company Brings Performance, Intelligence And Scalability To The Emerging Opticial Internet Infrastructure

Guaranteed Sustained 10/20/40 Gbps Line Rate Performance On A Single Chip

SANTA CLARA, Calif., - SEPTEMBER 18, 2000 - A new network processor company was unveiled today that will meet carrier equipment OEMs' requirements for the emerging optical Internet infrastructure. Bay Microsystems has broken down barriers in the industry by developing a deterministic network processor architecture that provides a guaranteed sustained 10/20/40 Gbps line rate performance, regardless of traffic patterns and network services. Bay meets carrier's requirements for ultra-high performance, intelligence, high integration and scalability from OC12c to OC768c. Bay's single-chip network processor solutions are targeted to carrier equipment OEMs in the Optical Networking, Broadband Access, Datacom Infrastructure, and Voice Gateway markets.

"In order to address the emerging optical network infrastructure, OEMs must deliver products that meet the ultra-high performance, integration and scalability requirements of the telecommunication carriers," said Rick Bleszynski, chairman and CEO of Bay Microsystems. "Yet this has not been enabled by the current network processor vendors, forcing OEMs to develop their own ASICs in house. By developing intelligent, ultra-high performance solutions with a migration path from nXOC12c to nxOC48c to nxOC192c to OC768c, Bay truly delivers on the promise of what the next generation network processor should be."

Bay's initial single chip solution will sustain guaranteed line rate performance of 10 Gbps. Shortly thereafter, Bay will deliver a single chip 20 Gbps solution, followed by a single chip 40 Gbps solution.

"Network processors have always promised to revolutionize the industry, much like the microprocessor or the DSP," said Dave Passmore, research director, The Burton Group. "Yet in order to do this, these processors must meet the advanced integration and performance requirements of next generation carrier infrastructure systems. Bay Microsystems has leveraged three generations of network processor experience to create a scalable, highly integrated architecture that promises to enable a whole new class of networking OEM products."

The Bay team combines proven industry expertise in network processors, microprocessors and video processors from companies such as Cisco, Softcom Microsystems, PMC Sierra, LSI Logic, Intel, AMD, Hitachi, Xilinx, NexGen and C-Cube. These team members have participated in the successful deployment of over 60 VLSI products resulting in multi-billion dollar revenue streams.

"I have worked with these folks for many years now. They have a track record of delivering exactly what they say they will do. I have joined the Board of Bay because I found them to have the utmost professional integrity as well as solid technical expertise," said Bernie Vonderschmitt, Chairman of Xilinx Corporation.

The company began operations in Q4 1999, with funding from Selby Venture Partners, Alliance Venture Partners and Needham Capital.
